Viva, Christmas and 2017
It has been a while since I last wrote because I've been enjoying Christmas and the New Year. So just before Xmas (sorry for the abbreviation) I had my viva. I never know if you should pronounce it Viva or Veva. I want to say Veva, as in the Spice Girls song Veva (Viva) Forever!.
Anyway, it started off well then went a bit pear shaped. I can't remember exactly the question they asked, but it was something like "tell us what you've been doing and what has worked well for you". And by 'they' I mean two lecturers and the head of the MA course.
At the time I wasn't feeling particularly positive about my work or that I hadn't found my way yet.
I remember saying I found it frustrating that the BA course seemed to have first refusal on the machines and workshops. I mentioned that I'd asked to be shown how the computerised looms worked but I was told that it wouldn't be until February.
The conversation then went round in circles in my mind for a good 5 minutes.
I was asked what I wanted to do after the course and I said I think I'd like to get into teaching and that I'd hoped that by using as many machines/areas of work as possible would increase my chances of getting a job afterwards, perhpas as a technician.
I was then told that that's not the purpose of the MA and it has only been this year (2016) that the technicians have offered specific times in the timetable for the MA students.
Something I found hard to believe and quite a short fall with regards to what the MA course should offer.
The Uni has amazing facilities but I feel like the MA course has been overlooked with regards to trying the machines out. If the MA students could join in with the BA students when they have their inductions on the machines then it would and could stop the repetition that the technicians face. I think this is mainly in part due to the fact that the BA course is well structured with regards to modules and the MA course isnt because a lot of us don't know what we want to concentrate on when we first start.
Anyway, rant over. I'm really enjoying the course and I know I need to concentrate on my work and shrug off the annoyances when they appear.
I left feeling despondent but then after I reflected on the meeting I think its now given me a clearer understanding of where I want to go and this year I'm going to concentrate on..........drum roll please.... weaving and print. Specifically camo/animal inspired print and the weave will be experimental until I find my mojo.
Xmas was good, spent it with my dad and then my husband and I (and Benji) spent a week in Austria, St Wolfsgang to be exact. It was very hygge to spend time walking, doodling, reading and watching movies.
I also decided I'd try Dryanuary, so far so good.

So whilst away i bought a loom from Looe in Cornwall and we pick it up this weekend!
On my way to Uni to have a group crit on our first portfolios.
